F-16C/Ds for Taiwan not dead yet

The United States has not given up on a plan to sell 66 F-16C/D fighters to Taiwan, the U.S. acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Peter Lavoy said before a House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing.

U.S. Senate rejects Cornyn’s attempt to sell F-16s to Taiwan

The Senate on Thursday voted 48-48 on a proposal by Republican Senator John Cornyn to sell F-16s to Taiwan, 60 votes were needed for approval.

U.S. official: Upgraded F-16s for Taiwan as good as new

A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the upgrade of Taiwan’s F-16s will provide essentially the same quality as new F-16C/Ds at a far cheaper price.

A U.S. congressional source told AFP that the Obama administration was to brief lawmakers of its decision not to sell new F-16s to Taiwan. It will instead upgrade Taiwan’s F-16A/Bs.
