Canada’s Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan has just announced that his ministry will reach out to fighter manufacturers this summer to determine the best aircraft to meet the country’s needs.

“Officials will seek up-to-date information from leading manufacturers on key issues, including cost, economic benefits for Canada, and their ability to deliver planes quickly,” he said. “That information will inform a decision on a procurement path in the coming months.”
Sajjan also refused to comment on whether there will be an open competition for the replacement of the CF-18. His party, the Liberals, had promised to hold an open competition during the election campaign.
