USN abandons Surface Ship Torpedo Defense system for CVNs

The U.S. Navy has decided not to proceed with the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense (SSTD) system program and will remove them from its aircraft carriers.

The office of Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) said in its latest report that the system’s Countermeasure Anti-Torpedo (CAT) demonstrated some capability to defeat an incoming torpedo but its reliability is uncertain and its lethality is unproven.

The system will be removed from aircraft carriers when they go for scheduled maintenance.
