Retired USAF General: “F-35 will be no match for the J-20”

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney warned that the Chengdu J-20 could defeat the F-35.

“On any given day we would be lucky to have 70 F-22s and 5 B-2s operationally available worldwide plus the new F-35 which will be no match for the J-20. Shades of 1939 are here again.”

  1. I find it amazing that a jet that has not even flown yet is being classified as a world beater. I respect General McInerney’s service, but he is from the generation that told the world that the MiG-23, 25, and the 29 were vastly superior to U.S. jets of the time. As we know now, those jets were nothing special and were usually inferior to western jets of the time. Before we label the J-20 as an equal to other 5th Generation fighters, let’s see it do something besides a wheelie.

  2. Agree with Mr. Dunlop. I remember all the fear about the Mig-25…until we got one. I would not downplay the threat of the Chinese. They are penetrating everyone of our programs and collecting data better than the Russians ever did (because we let their academics “Collaborate” with our technical universities among other things).

I believe our weapons design and acquisition needs to be reformed, and Government Labs allowed allowed to play a greater part in directing technology insertion into these programs. The bloated paper costs of current systems make losing one in a fight a calamity in and of itself.

…and such politically driven critiques are worthless ( gee General, maybe we should by more Raptors…..duh…not biased much are you?)
