Reuters has obtained a Pentagon document which projects the total cost to develop, buy and operate the F-35 over the next 50-plus years at $1.45 trillion.

The new estimate by the Cost Assessment Program Evaluation (CAPE) office now pegs the average price of the jet at $112.5 million, and the amount does not include the F135 engine which costs another $22 million.
