Taiwan plans to replace the old Chaparral missile on the Kang Ding-class frigate with a surface-launch version of the Sky Sword II radar guided air-to-air missile.
This was revealed during a parliamentary session by Navy chief of staff Adm. Kao Tien-chung. Kao said although its feasible to install a vertical-launch version of the TC-2 on the stealth frigates, Taiwan does not have the blue prints to make the modifications need to install the launch cells.
Instead the missiles will be fitted in two canisters with a total of sixteen missiles. The refit will start in 2017 and testing will be carried out with ROCN Chih Yang (FFG-932) frigate.
