USAF Major wins safety award for landing AT-63 Pampa II with 80 percent of left wing missing

Maj. Douglas Witmer is this year’s recipient of the Koren Kolligian Jr. trophy for outstanding Airmanship.

Witmer was on exchange with the Argentinian Air Force in Aug. 10, 2012 when his AT-63 Pampa II lost 80 percent of its left wing after a midair collision.

Despite the extensive damage, Witmer was able to avoid ejecting from the aircraft and landed at a nearby airport.
