The Swiss Federal Dept. of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport says the purchase of Gripen fighters is necessary in order to avoid disbanding the Patrouille Suisse.
Without new fighters, Switzerland will be left with only 32 fighters to provide air defense coverage.
