Future USAF munitions will have imaging sensor similar to insect’s eye

The Air Force Small Business Innovation Research / Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program office recently funded a Phase II follow-on contract to develop wide field-of-view (WFOV) imaging seekers to guide future munitions.

The biologically-inspired Artificial Compound Eye (ACE) optical technology generate images from multiple sub-images that view different parts of the field-of-view, similar to the compound eye of an insect. Software processing will then stitch together the sub-images into a single smooth image.
