Pentagon raises red flag on GPS OCX

The Pentagon’s chief arms buyer said he is “very worried” Raytheon’s development of the Global Positioning System Next Generation Operational Control System (GPS OCX) and he wants to take another “deep dive” review of the program.

The program is two years behind schedule and the cost has soared 80.5 percent above its initial contract value. Frank Kendall told reporters that while Raytheon has completed on some of the work, the Pentagon is exploring the feasibility of letting other companies compete for the job to finish the project.

The GPS OCX is a ground control system to manage the GPS satellite constellation. When implemented, the new system will improve accuracy by removing the current limit on the number of GPS satellites in orbit.
