Taiwan’s incoming government wants indigenous jet trainer

A report by China Times says the incoming government for Taiwan is keen on developing an indigenous jet trainer to replace the AT-3.

A source privy to the development said the move is to allow Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) to regain its ability to develop advanced aircraft.

However, the military is having reservations with this approach as AIDC had lost the skills after development of the IDF fighter ended 20 years ago. Taiwan does not have the ability to manufacture its own jet engines as well.

Some believe the island will eventually assemble a jet trainer locally instead.
