P&W developing upgrade package for TF33 to keep its maintenance costs down

Pratt & Whitney is developing an upgrade package for the TF33 turbofan engine so that it can continue to power the B-52H bomber well into 2040.

Company executive Bennett Croswell told Flight Global that with current low oil prices, the company is betting on an upgrade package for the incumbent engine rather than enticing the U.S. Air Force with a new engine for the bomber.
