The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has decided that its two Canberra-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) ships will eventually be fitted with the Phalanx close-in weapon systems (CIWS).

Approval has been granted for each ship to be installed with up to three systems and the number of mounts depended on final design and radar cross-section analysis, the RAN told Jane’s.
