The air strike was carried out on a position at Jebel Tharda near Deir al-Zor airport on Sept. 17. Russia quickly notified the United States that the coalition warplanes had struck a Syrian government position.

Media reports say the U.S.-led coalition had believed that the position was occupied by ISIL.
