Edmund J. Burke and Astrid Stuth Cevallos from American think tank RAND have completed their study on China’s approach to Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in theory and practice.

The authors concluded that the establishment of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) by Beijing did not create any favorable conditions for China nor boost its claim over the Senkakus (Diaoyus).
Secondly, the establishment of a ADIZ in South China Sea could arguably work against Chinese strategic goals there, according to the report.
However, U.S. operations or diplomatic/political-military developments in the area could trigger Beijing to establish one in South China Sea.
