Three anonymous sources told Reuters that Tokyo has decided that its next fighter will be based on a Western design and the project will costs around $40 billion.
Reuters added that besides a third round of request for information (RFI) to defense companies, a separate, more detailed document was delivered to London and Washington as well.
“Boeing is very interested in working with the U.S. and Japan governments in order to collaborate with Japanese industry on the next fighter program,” a Boeing official was quoted as saying in the article.
