The helicopter destroyer had earlier encountered a Chinese submarine at the entrance of Strait of Malacca while heading towards Singapore. The warship tried to pick up the submarine again while it sails for home. The onboard sonar and a SH-60K helicopter were used in the search, which was futile.

  1. “Futile” ? .. From your own source – “Ultimately, the search for the Chinese submarine on Oct. 26 likely had to be stopped, as the MSDF ships were forced to increase their speed in order to get through the South China Sea quickly to avoid a direct hit from Typhoon No. 26, approaching from the east.”
