USAF learning how to ‘grow’ runways

In a future near-peer conflict, the U.S. Air Force might have to disperse its aircraft to austere locations to escape enemy attacks. However, the challenge will be to create runways rapidly at these locations. One solution proposed by a team called “Project Medusa” is to use biomanufacturing to build runways.

Team member Maj. MacKenzie Birchenough says by applying bacteria to the surface and growing it to become a runway. Warfighters could do away with the need to bring in cement, heavy equipment and dozens of personnel to create a concrete runway.

So far, the team has applied the concept to a 2,500 square foot site with good results.
