Delivering the first CMV-22B to NAS Patuxent River wasn’t that smooth sailing

The U.S. Navy’s new CMV-22B Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) tilt-rotor was delivered to NAS Patuxent River in February. The ferry flight was a total of 6.5 hours but it took two days to accomplish.

Starting off from Bell Military Aircraft Assembly & Delivery Center in Amarillo, Texas, the aircraft could only be flown VMC conditions as it was fitted with extensive test gear.

The crew had to wait for one week for clear weather on the route from Texas to Maryland. After taking off on Feb. 1, the three-man crew landed at Millington for lunch and refueling. The second segment from Millington to Patuxent River was disrupted due to poor weather at the destination and they decided to divert to Lynchburg, Virginia.

The next day, the Osprey arrived at its final destination in the morning.
