The Royal Navy has a British Defence Singapore Support Unit (BDSSU) there in Sembawang. The place used to be the Singapore Naval Base and became a commercial shipyard after the British withdraw troops from Singapore in 1971.

It was at Sembawang 80 years ago that Force Z, comprising of battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse, set sail on Dec. 8, 1941 to intercept the Japanese invasion fleet in the South China Sea. Both warships were sunk on Dec. 10 by Japanese aircraft. The first time capital ships were sunk by enemy aircraft while underway at sea.
