The Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) Chief of Staff Gen. Lee Seong-yong has resigned on Jun. 4 over the handling of a sexual assault case that led to the death of a female master sergeant.
The victim died of apparent suicide in late May. She suffered mental distress after being molested in a car by a colleague of the same rank in March.
The victim’s family has accused the air force of covering up the investigation.
Lee offered to step down on Jun. 3 and his resignation was quickly accepted by President Moon Jae-in. Lee had been on the job for less than one year after taking up the position in September 2020.
