USAF’s has a new tactical data link system called Heimdall

The U.S. Air Force has tested a new tactical data link system called Heimdall. The new system was tested onboard an F-15C during exercise Northern Edge 21.

The team was conducting tests of their Heimdall tactical data link technology, which improves real-time information sharing and overall fighter performance in highly contested, near-peer environments. Heimdall is the product of a partnership between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory and the Air Force’s Aerial Networks Division.

Michael McAuliffe, Tactical Datalinks and Gateways Branch program manager, said Heimdall is “an advanced capability not only for the aircraft of the future but the aircraft of today.”

Dr. Bow-Nan Cheng, MIT LL associate group leader, says Heimdall allows a phased rollout of a data link system compared to TDL technologies. Modifications to the F-15C only took three days at Eglin Air Force Base.
