It was just two days after Turkey had invaded Cyprus and Skabardonis was paired with Flying Officer Ioannis Dinopoulos. Dinopoulos had a faulty radio and was flying behind Skabardonis.
Both were near Lemnos when a pair of Turkish F-102s ended up at the tail of Skabardonis’s F-5. The Turkish pilots did not detect the presence of Dinopoulos. As Skabardonis was maneuvering to shake off the F-102s. His wingman saw a Turkish pilot launching a missile at Skabardonis. Dinopoulos fired two AIM-9s at the F-102s but the first missile missed and the second missile found its target.
The other Turkish warplane escape but ran out of fuel before landing. The pilot died while attempting to land on a road.
