The Asahi disclosed that Japan’s defense ministry is unlikely to seek funding in the fiscal 2022 budget to build the alternative for the abandoned Aegis Ashore missile defense system.
An anonymous government official was quoted as saying that “such budget requests will likely be impossible over the next few years.”
Japan’s goal was to install those land-based systems on warships instead. But questions remain over the cost of designing and operating those ships.
Even if the budget is approved, the ships are unlikely to be ready until a decade later. Time is required to build the vessels and train the crews.
