That morning, 19 aircraft from the PLA approached Taiwan’s air defense identification zone and the F-16 was one of the aircraft being scrambled.
The pilot had reported an issue with the landing gear during the first start-up. After troubleshooting by the ground crew, the jet was started up again. However, due to human errors, the landing gear retracted as the jet was starting up.
A spare aircraft was scrambled to take its place.
