Local stresses caused by ESM and satcom antenna lead to tail cracks on CH-148

The Canadian military has determined that cracks that appeared in the tail booms of its CH-148 fleet were due to local stresses caused by the equipment installed there.

The Department of National Defence said in a statement that was the conclusion in the “initial determination” by Canadian military personnel and manufacturer Sikorsky.

The equipment in question are the electronic warfare suite and satellite communications antenna.

Cracks on 11 of the 21 affected helicopters have been patched.
