A look into China’s formerly secret underground HQ-2 missile manufacturing facility

China’s CCTV television station recently made a video on the once secret 061 base in Zunyi, Guizhou. During the Cold War, China embarked on a “Third Line” program to disperse its military production capability in order to survive nuclear attacks.

The Zunyi base was formerly tasked with manufacturing the HQ-2 surface-to-air missile, a copy of the Soviet SA-2.

A key requirement for a Third Line site is to be next to a mountain, is a disperse location and must be underground.

This site was used by the military until 2006 and is now converted into a wine cellar.
