China uses the single-seat J-10 to help pilots transition to the J-20

China’s CCTV had an interview with J-20 pilot Chen Liu. Chen is one of the few pilots in China who could fly the J-10, J-16 and J-20.

Chen said he flew the J-10 in the single-seat model without ever flying the dual-seat variant. Chen said the PLAAF took this step to iron out issues that may arise when pilots on go to first fly on the J-20 as the stealth fighter does not have a twin-seat variant.

Chen said he had no difficulty when he started flying the J-20, however, the J-20 is more difficult to master as employing weapons on the J-20 is more complex. The pilot will also have to process and act on the flow of data provided by numerous sensors aboard the jet.
