Chinese J-16 cut across nose of RAAF P-8 and release chaff

The Australian Department of Defence has released a press statement on Jun. 5 saying that a Chinese J-16 fighter carried out a dangerous maneuver to a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8 maritime patrol aircraft in South China Sea on May 26.

Media reports in Australia provided more details on the incident. The fighter first approach the side of the P-8 and release flares. It then cut across the nose of the P-8 and release chaff. Some chaff were sucked into the engines of the P-8.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he is aware of the incident and the government is concerned about this incident.

“We have expressed those concerns through appropriate channels,” Albanese was quoted as saying.
