Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) says it will be carrying out the country’s first scramjet flight-test on Jul. 24 using a S-520-RD1 rocket.

The experiment will focus on gathering data on the fuel combustion so that the information can be compared with test points that were gathered in the wind tunnel.
The S-520-RD1 sounding rocket will be flown to a height above 100km before the test payload is released approximately 150km from the launch point. The payload will then reenter the atmosphere and reach a speed of Mach 5.5 and ignite its ethylene fuel for six seconds.
