Japan to build radar system to monitor foreign “killer” satellites

The Japanese government will assign the Japan Air Self-Defense Force the task of monitoring space debris and foreign “killer” satellites.

It will build a radar system at a former radar station of the Maritime Self-Defense Force near Sanyo Onoda city in Yamaguchi prefecture for this purpose. It is expected to be completed in Fiscal Year 2022.

The military is expected to work closely with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on the aspect of monitoring space debris. A space surveillance unit under the Air Self-Defense Force will be activated for the assignment.
