38 North: New air-to-air missiles could be a game changer for North Korea’s fighter fleet

38 North believes North Korea is focusing on developing indigenous air-to-air missiles that will help bolster the lethality of its fighter fleet.

Two unknown air-to-air missiles were shown to the world during the National Defense Development Exhibition Self-Defense 2021. One resembles an infrared-guided dogfight missile while the other is visually similar to a beyond-visual-range radar-guided air-to-air missile.

38 North says key technologies that North Korea had acquired during the development of new surface-to-air missiles will be adapted on these new air-to-air missiles.

Most air battles over the Korean peninsula will likely be fought within visual range due to the small airspace and a new dogfight missile will bring North Korea’s MiG-21s out of obsolescence.
