GLSDB could see combat debut in Ukraine

Boeing has put forward a proposal to the Pentagon to supply its Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) to Ukraine.

Reuters claimed that the GLSDB could be delivered as early as spring 2023 to Ukraine.

The GLSDB has a GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) attached to a M26 rocket. The Department of Defense has a large number of GBU-39 in its inventory due to the exit from Afghanistan. Intended to be dropped from aircraft, Boeing and Sweden’s Saab modified the weapon to fit on a rocket that can be fired from the ground. Making it easier for Ukraine to deploy the weapon.

Reuters pointed out a few roadblocks that the Pentagon needs to overcome in order for the GLSDB to reach Ukraine. Firstly, Boeing will have to be given a price discovery waiver, which exempts the company from proving that the product is offered at the best price possible. It will also require at least six other contractors to expedite the delivery of parts and services.
