Latvia’s military modernization continues with UH-60M delivery

Latvia has taken delivery of two UH-60M helicopters from the United States on Dec. 11.

The two rotorcraft were delivered to the air force base in Lielvarde on board a C-17 cargo plane.

Outgoing Defense Minister Artis Pabriks says: “This is a long-awaited addition to the arsenal that allows the Air Force to achieve a new level of capability by replacing the outmoded Soviet Mi-17s with new and advanced Black Hawk helicopters. The new equipment will help both in military operations and, if necessary, also in rescue works and other types of operations.”

The U.S. State Department approved the Foreign Military Sale to Latvia of four UH-60M Black Hawk Helicopters and related equipment for an estimated cost of $200 million in 2018. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said back then that Latvia intends to use the helicopters for a range of tasks including troop transport, border security, anti-terrorism operations, medical evacuation, search and rescue, resupply and external lift, and combat support in all weather conditions.
