The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) has agreed to transfer the Japanese-made helicopters to the Army Aviation Regiment of the Philippine Army (PA) to enhance the PA’s disaster response capabilities. The transfer will be made through a government grant, according to a statement by Army spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad.

With the addition of the UH-1J helicopters, the Army Aviation Regiment will be able to significantly increase its capabilities in various areas, including humanitarian assistance and disaster response, medical evacuation, transport of personnel and supplies, and damage assessment. The utility helicopters are expected to be received by the Philippine Army in two to three years, and will be a welcome addition to the Regiment’s current inventory of five to six aircraft.

The JGSDF announced its commitment to donate UH-1J helicopters to the Philippine Army during a bilateral meeting between the two armies on Dec. 11, 2021. The meeting took place as part of the first-ever Japan-Philippine-U.S. Trilateral Key Leaders’ Engagement at Camp Asaka in Tokyo, Japan.
