According to U.S. lawmakers Jason Crow and Adam Smith, Ukraine has expressed interest in obtaining the MK-20 cluster bomb to use its bomblets for dropping on Russian armored units via drones. The Ukrainian military reportedly considers these submunitions to have superior armor-piercing capabilities compared to the current drone weaponry being used.
Crow, a Democrat and former U.S. Army veteran, mentioned that he might support providing the MK-20 to Ukraine only if they give assurances that they will not use the bomblets in a clustered manner. Meanwhile, Smith, who is the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, confirmed that the Ukrainian military is seeking to cannibalize the MK-20’s submunitions.
It is worth noting that the production of MK-20s ceased years ago, although the U.S. military still possesses a stockpile of this Cold War-era weapon. However, the 2009 law prohibits the export of U.S. cluster munitions with a bomblet failure rate exceeding 1 percent, which encompasses most of the U.S. military’s stockpile. Nonetheless, U.S. President Joe Biden has the authority to waive this prohibition.
