Airbus, Lockheed Martin select the CF6-80E1 for LMXT strategic tanker

Lockheed Martin and Airbus have announced their selection of General Electric (GE) Aerospace’s CF6-80E1 propulsion system for the LMXT strategic tanker. The LMXT, based on Airbus’ A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), is Lockheed Martin’s proposed solution for the U.S. Air Force’s KC-135 recapitalization plan.

The decision to choose GE’s CF6 engine for the LMXT follows a competitive selection process, where it stood out for its proven durability, reliability, and performance. With its strong technological advancements over previous CF6 engines, the CF6-80E1 variant offers nearly 70,000 pounds of thrust and 15% greater fuel efficiency. GE’s CF6 engine family has a remarkable history of powering nearly 70% of the world’s wide-body aircraft for over 50 years.

By choosing an engine already in use on multiple U.S. Air Force platforms such as VC-25A and C-5M, the LMXT benefits from a common supply chain and existing knowledge base, translating into increased mission readiness rates.

The selection of GE’s CF6 engine is an essential milestone in the LMXT’s development, complementing previous announcements of Lockheed Martin and Airbus expanding operations in Georgia, Alabama, and Arkansas. Airbus’ U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, Alabama, will produce the LMXT as an A330 airliner, while Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics facility in Marietta, Georgia, will handle the tanker conversion. Airbus will manufacture the LMXT’s aerial refueling boom system in western Arkansas.

Lockheed Martin and Airbus, as the prime contractors, continue to work closely with GE to ensure the LMXT meets the U.S. Air Force’s specific requirements. With its combat-proven design, featuring a certified automatic air-to-air refueling boom, Enhanced Vision System, and integrated JADC2 suite, the LMXT offers advanced capabilities suited for operational theaters like the Indo-Pacific. The MRTT, on which the LMXT is based, is already the strategic tanker of choice for 14 nations worldwide, providing vital aerial refueling services to fighter, transport, and maritime patrol aircraft for both the U.S. and allied partners.
