Google’s SandboxAQ and USAF collaborate for quantum navigation

In a bid to overcome the challenges posed by GPS-denied environments during military operations, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) has enlisted the innovative prowess of SandboxAQ. A derivative of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, SandboxAQ specializes in harnessing the combined power of quantum science and artificial intelligence (AI) to address complex global challenges. Together with the USAF, they are embarking on a transformative journey to revolutionize navigation capabilities for aircrew members.

Modern military operations heavily rely on GPS navigation for accurate positioning, navigation, and timing. However, the vulnerabilities associated with signal jamming, signal loss, and inaccuracies due to adversarial activities have prompted the need for innovative navigation systems that can function robustly in the absence of reliable GPS signals.

The collaboration between the U.S. Air Force and SandboxAQ aims to address these navigational challenges head-on. Under the auspices of the Direct-to-Phase-II Small Business Innovation Research contract, SandboxAQ is set to introduce advanced quantum technology that significantly enhances navigation accuracy. This partnership capitalizes on the unique properties of quantum sensors, which exhibit high sensitivity to changes in magnetic and electric fields, resulting in unprecedented navigation precision.

The real-world validation of this novel navigation system occurred through live flight trials, demonstrating its applicability in real-time. These trials involved the C-17 aircraft in flight, showcasing the system’s capability for magnetic navigation (MagNav).

The ability to navigate using Earth’s magnetic field offers a reliable and resilient alternative to conventional GPS navigation. This is especially pertinent in scenarios where GPS signals might be compromised, providing a safeguarded navigation solution for aircrew members, ultimately enhancing mission success.
