Under the visionary guidance of the Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit, JetZero is set to receive a substantial $235 million investment over the span of four years. This funding will propel the company towards a groundbreaking milestone – the first flight of a full-scale demonstrator by the first quarter of 2027. In this transformative journey, JetZero is joined by industry titans Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites, bringing their formidable expertise in advanced aircraft design, manufacturing, and mission systems integration. A powerful partnership indeed, this consortium is set to harness the future of aviation. JetZero has also chosen Pratt & Whitney, a world-renowned name in aviation propulsion systems, to provide engines for the prototype aircraft.

The blended wing body’s departure from conventional aircraft design holds immense promise. This innovation substantially reduces aerodynamic drag by over 30%, ushering in a new era of heightened efficiency. The integration of body and wing not only increases lift but also paves the way for extended range, prolonged loiter time, and enhanced payload delivery efficiencies. In an era defined by logistical challenges, these capabilities are crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring optimal mission success.

Notably, the blended wing body’s transformative potential extends beyond military applications. The commercial aviation sector, including passenger airlines and air freight companies, stands to gain significantly from this innovation. By maximizing cabin or cargo space while simultaneously minimizing operational fuel costs, the blended wing body heralds a new era of sustainability and economic viability in aviation.

“The BWB is the best first step on the path to zero carbon emissions. It offers 50% lower fuel burn using today’s engines and the airframe efficiency needed to support a transition to zero carbon emissions propulsion in the future,” said JetZero CEO Tom O’Leary, “No other proposed aircraft comes close in terms of efficiency.”
