As technology evolves, so do the threats in the modern battlefield. The rise of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has brought about new challenges, leading to innovative solutions to counter their potential risks. The U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division is at the forefront of this effort, taking a significant step to equip itself with advanced Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS) equipment. This move aims to enhance the division’s capability to detect, identify, and neutralize small UAS threats effectively.

The arsenal of C-sUAS equipment includes the Bal Chatri, Modi Smart Short, and Drone Buster, each designed to tackle distinct aspects of UAS threats. The Bal Chatri operates as a vigilant detection and alert device, keeping troops informed about UAS presence. On the offensive and defensive fronts, the Modi Smart Short comes into play, with its ability to disrupt and jam communications associated with UAS. Meanwhile, the Drone Buster serves as a handheld jamming device, further strengthening the division’s response options.
Recognizing the importance of seamless integration, over 80 soldiers and leaders across all brigades in the division have undergone rigorous C-UAS New Equipment Training. This training encompasses classroom learning and practical exercises to familiarize troops with the C-sUAS equipment. Additionally, brigades are mandated to send operators for further C-UAS training through the Emergent Threat Training and Readiness Capability (ET2RC) Team. The goal is to ensure that commanders are adept at executing C-UAS operations during critical exercises and in forward-deployed environments.
A pivotal development in countering UAS threats is the establishment of the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office (JCO) in February 2020. This department holds responsibility for defining doctrine, requirements, and training, while also providing joint solutions to address emerging challenges. Complementing this, the Army’s Fires Center of Excellence (FcoE) at Fort Sill has launched the Joint C-sUAS University, offering essential institutional training to enhance operational readiness.
A crucial step in fortifying defenses is the realignment and creation of Air Defense Artillery Battalions, with a dedicated battery for C-UAS operations. Within this context, the 6-56 Air Defense Artillery Regiment stands out as a critical component of the 1st Cavalry Division. This regiment is set to receive the FS-LIDS and M-LIDS systems, which boast advanced targeting capabilities. These technologies promise to expand range, enhance lethality, and ultimately improve survivability against UAS threats.
In a rapidly changing battlefield, staying ahead of emerging threats is imperative. The integration of C-sUAS equipment within the 1st Cavalry Division underscores the commitment to this goal.
