KC-135 Stratotankers of the 100th Air Refueling Wing transform operations with RTIC

In a groundbreaking development, the 100th Air Refueling Wing has equipped some of its KC-135 Stratotankers with the Real-Time Information in the Cockpit (RTIC) system, marking a significant leap in military aviation capabilities. The RTIC system introduces advanced communication and information-sharing capabilities, enhancing situational awareness and tactical efficiency for aircrews.

Designed to provide key insights and tactical data, the RTIC system opens a new era of communication for the KC-135s, often regarded as the workhorses of the skies. “We’ve got extra equipment, including three screens and two radios, which can all be configured and moved to different locations around the aircraft,” explains Capt. Jarod Suhr, 100th Operations Support Squadron tactics officer and KC-135R pilot. “It’s mostly for sharing tactical information.”

At the heart of this innovation is “Link 16,” a data link that enables seamless communication between aircraft and various platforms, from ground systems to command posts. The RTIC system, akin to a high-tech laptop, serves as the portal to this wealth of tactical data. It facilitates real-time sharing of information, providing aircrews with a comprehensive picture of the battlespace and enhancing operational effectiveness.

The benefits of this new system are far-reaching. Increased situational awareness, heightened tactical survivability, and secure communication channels are at the forefront. “It’s information sharing, and it allows us to communicate in less permissive environments,” Suhr adds.
