VPAF Su-22 crashes

A Vietnamese Air Force Su-22 fighter jet crashed in central Quang Nam Province on Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, during a routine training exercise. While the pilot, Captain Do Tien Duc, ejected safely and is unharmed, the incident caused property damage and minor injuries to one local resident.

The Ministry of National Defense confirmed the crash, which occurred around 11:15 AM in the Binh Minh neighborhood of Dien Ban Town. Captain Duc reported experiencing technical difficulties ten minutes after taking off from Da Nang Airport. Following instructions from the flight commander, he steered the aircraft away from populated areas before parachuting out approximately 19 kilometers from the runway.

The crashed Su-22, belonging to the 372nd Air Force Division, 929th Fighter Regiment, landed in a vacant lot roughly 10 meters from a house, damaging its roof. Debris scattered across the area, injuring a nearby resident who was working in their garden. The individual received treatment at Vĩnh Đức General Hospital for minor injuries.

Authorities quickly deployed firefighters, ambulances, and military personnel to the crash site. Police cordoned off the area and instructed residents to stay indoors while investigations into the cause of the incident began. Initial reports suggest a loss of control played a role, but a definitive explanation is still pending.

A similar incident involving a Su-22 occurred in January 2023, tragically resulting in the pilot’s death.
