South Korea began production of its version of the U.S. hunter-killer MQ-9 Reaper drone to enhance its defense surveillance capabilities against North Korea, ending the 18 years of delay, announced its defense procurement agency.

Known as the Korean Unmanned System–Flight Strategic (KUS-FS), the MUAV is a testament to South Korea’s growing prowess in the field of unmanned aerial technology. Developed by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD), this drone boasts impressive specifications, rivaling the capabilities of the widely-used American MQ-9 Reaper. Development began in 2008 and the program was suspened in 2011 after South Korea choose to buy the RQ-4.
With a wingspan of 25 meters and a length of 13 meters, the KUS-FS is a formidable aerial platform. Powered by a modified 1,200 horsepower turboprop engine, it can reach a service ceiling of 13,000 meters and maintain flight for a remarkable 24 hours. This extended endurance and high altitude operation capability translate to superior surveillance and reconnaissance potential, allowing the drone to gather crucial intelligence from afar.
The primary objective of the KUS-FS is to enhance South Korea’s surveillance capabilities along its border with North Korea. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, it can capture detailed images from distances exceeding 100 kilometers, providing valuable insights into activities across the border. This enhanced situational awareness is expected to play a crucial role in deterring aggression and ensuring regional security.
While primarily designed for intelligence gathering, the KUS-FS also possesses offensive capabilities. It can be armed with domestically-produced Cheongeom anti-tank missiles, allowing it to engage in targeted strikes if necessary. This multi-functionality further underscores the drone’s strategic value for the South Korean military.
The KUS-FS marks a significant step forward for South Korea’s military modernization efforts.
