The Czech Republic and the United States officially cemented their partnership in the F-35 fighter jet program on Jan. 29, signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the acquisition of 24 fifth-generation aircraft. This landmark deal marks a pivotal step in modernization for the Czech Air Force and signals a deepening of defense cooperation within Europe.

The deal, approved by the Czech government in September 2023, culminates months of negotiations and formalizes the purchase of 24 F-35A variants. Cementing this strategic project, Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová and U.S. Ambassador Bijan Sabet signed a Memorandum of Understanding, witnessed by Lieutenant General Karel Řehka, Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces.
Delivery of the first F-35s is slated for 2031, with the eleven-year acquisition process meticulously planned. A comprehensive implementation plan ensures smooth integration into the Czech air force, encompassing personnel training, infrastructure development, and logistical support. Until then, the existing fleet of Swedish Gripens will remain in service.
Beyond the hardware itself, the Czech Republic and Germany are forging a robust partnership in the F-35 realm. Commanders of both air forces, Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz (Germany) and Major General Petr Čepelka (Czechia), recently met to discuss joint training and future operations. This collaboration, Čepelka emphasizes, will not only enhance individual defense capabilities but also bolster international cooperation and effectiveness.
“This investment in modern air forces is evidence of the determination of both countries to maintain a safe and stable region,” Čepelka stated. Luftwaffe Commander Gerhartz echoes this sentiment, highlighting the joint approach to F-35s as a significant step for European airpower.
