The Estonian Defense Forces welcomed the arrival of the Blue Spear mobile anti-ship missile system this week, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s coastal defense capabilities. This advanced system, developed jointly by Israel and Singapore, delivers long-range precision strike capabilities against both sea and land targets within a 290-kilometer radius.
Estonia became the first nation to acquire the Blue Spear in 2022, solidifying its pioneering role in introducing this fifth-generation missile technology. The €100 million project encompasses not only the missile system itself but also infrastructure investments and future operational costs.
Gen. Martin Herem, Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, highlighted the system’s crucial role in deterring potential threats, particularly those posed by the Baltic Fleet. The Blue Spear’s capabilities effectively neutralize the option of transferring air defenses to sea, thereby hindering enemy aircraft operations within Estonian airspace. Additionally, it poses a potential challenge to securing military supplies destined for the Kaliningrad Oblast.
To support the effective operation of the Blue Spear, a dedicated Coastal Defense Division has been established, comprising over 100 active and enlisted personnel. Training programs are already underway to ensure their readiness. Initially, the missiles will be mounted on land vehicles, with plans for developing sea-launch capabilities in the future.
The implementation of this advanced technology has also brought to light a critical shortage of skilled personnel. According to Navy Capt. Johan-Elias Seljamaa, deputy commander of the Estonian Navy, there is a pressing need for mechatronics engineers who possess the expertise to manage and maintain these complex systems.
