British Defense Secretary flew from Canberra to Adelaide in a Super Hornet

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps participated in a unique high-speed travel experience during his recent visit to Australia for the annual Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN). Following meetings with his Australian counterpart, Shapps was offered and cleared for a flight in the back seat of a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet for a trip from Canberra to Adelaide.

The Australian Department of Defence positioned this gesture as a demonstration of “an important element of Australia’s defence capability” to a key partner nation.

Plane spotters captured footage of a pair of Super Hornets taking off from Canberra shortly after 7:00 pm on the same day Shapps attended a last post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

The flight was reported by ABC News and one defence official told the ABC that Shapps “enjoyed the experience.”
