Argentina signs letter of intent to purchase 24 F-16s from Denmark

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen signed a letter of intent with his Argentinian counterpart, Luis Alfonso Petri, in Buenos Aires on Mar. 26. This letter paves the way for the potential sale of 24 F-16 fighter jets from Denmark to Argentina.

The sale received the green light from the U.S. government, which plays a crucial role in authorizing the export of American-made military equipment. For Denmark, this agreement is part of a broader military modernization program. As Denmark transitions to the F-35 fighter jet, they are phasing out their F-16 fleet. This sale allows Denmark to strategically re-allocate these aircraft while bolstering Argentina’s air defense capabilities.

“I have had an extremely fruitful meeting with my Argentine colleague who has expressed great satisfaction on becoming a member of the family of F-16 nations across the globe. The deal has been negotiated in collaboration with the United States,” says Danish Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen.

The letter of intent signifies a key milestone, but the process isn’t complete. Denmark has already donated 19 F-16s to Ukraine, and the remaining 24 are slated for Argentina. Both parties will convene again to solidify a final sales contract, which will be signed in Denmark. Danish authorities ensured transparency throughout the process, keeping their Parliament’s Foreign Policy Committee, Defense Committee, and Defense Agreement Group informed about the potential sale.
