The Texas Air National Guard deployed an MQ-9 unmanned aerial system (UAS) in March 2024 to assist firefighting efforts in the Texas Panhandle, according to a press release issued by the 147th Attack Wing.

The MQ-9, equipped with advanced sensors and imaging technology, provided critical real-time intelligence and situational awareness to firefighters battling the blazes. This data stream, analyzed and distributed by highly trained pilots and sensor operators using advanced video software stationed remotely at Ellington Field in Houston, played a vital role in aiding strategic decision-making and resource allocation for ground crews.
The Texas Air National Guard emphasized the collaborative nature of the firefighting effort, highlighting the partnership between the Guard, Texas Department of Emergency Management, Texas Forestry Service personnel, local firefighters, and emergency management officials.
