The Portuguese Air Force (FAP) has received its second KC-390 Millennium aircraft, significantly bolstering its airlift and strategic transport capabilities. This delivery comes just two days after a formal handover ceremony held at Embraer’s facilities in Gavião Peixoto, Brazil. The ceremony, attended by FAP Chief of Staff General João Cartaxo Alves, signified the official transfer of ownership and included the symbolic presentation of the aircraft keys.

Both General Alves and Embraer President and CEO Bosco da Costa Júnior emphasized the strong ties between Portugal and Brazil during the ceremony. They highlighted the collaborative effort between the two air forces and Embraer, which resulted in the development and production of the advanced KC-390.

The Portuguese government’s 2019 acquisition included five KC-390 aircraft and a dedicated flight simulator. The first aircraft arrived in October 2023 and has since accumulated over 500 hours of flight time, primarily dedicated to medical evacuations and logistical transport, including the relocation of two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

The Embraer-produced KC-390 is a game-changer for Squadron 506 “Rinocerontes.” This intercontinental-range aircraft boasts a diverse mission set. It can handle strategic and tactical operations, cater to both civilian and military needs, and perform a wide range of tasks. From transporting troops, vehicles, and cargo to executing paratroop drops, aerial refueling, search and rescue missions, and firefighting, the KC-390 offers unparalleled versatility.

  1. This may be a reason for Lockheed Martin to design a two engine C-XXX aircraft to replace the venerable C-130 of all types. It would be transport, tanker, dropping parachute forces and KC-XXX tanker.

Poland maybe trying to prod Lockheed Martin
