L3Harris initiates production of Viper Shield EW Suite for the F-16

L3Harris Technologies has commenced production of its cutting-edge Viper Shield electronic warfare (EW) suite, marking a significant milestone in F-16 fighter jet capabilities. The all-digital system, officially designated AN/ALQ-254(V)1, is set to equip F-16 fleets across six nations, enhancing their combat readiness against emerging threats.

Developed in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force, Viper Shield represents a leap forward in EW technology. The system creates a virtual electronic shield around the aircraft, employing sophisticated software-defined components to deliver unprecedented digital radar threat warning and robust countermeasure capabilities.

Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris, emphasized the system’s critical role in modern warfare. “Equipping aircrews and commanders with situational awareness about the electronic landscape gives them the ability to identify, locate and counter threats at the speed of relevance,” Zoiss stated.

Viper Shield’s advanced architecture integrates seamlessly with the F-16’s APG-83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, significantly boosting situational awareness. Its digital radio frequency memory (DRFM)-based jamming system provides enhanced protection against advanced threats, a crucial feature in increasingly complex battlespace scenarios.

The system’s versatility is evident in its dual installation options, either integrated within the aircraft or as an external pod. This flexibility, coupled with its small 3U form factor, enables integration across multiple F-16 block configurations, including the latest Block 70/72 variants.

L3Harris has designed Viper Shield with an eye toward the future. Its open-system architecture and use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology facilitate easier upgrades, allowing the system to evolve alongside emerging threats. This forward-looking approach extends to its modular design, which supports field-swappable components and promises lower lifecycle costs.

The production of Viper Shield at L3Harris’ Clifton, New Jersey facility not only marks a technological advancement but also continues the company’s long-standing legacy in EW systems. With over 30 years of experience in F-16 electronic warfare and more than 60 years in advanced EW technology development, L3Harris brings a wealth of expertise to this latest innovation.

As geopolitical tensions persist and electronic warfare capabilities become increasingly crucial, the Viper Shield system positions itself as a key asset for F-16 operators worldwide. L3Harris reports ongoing discussions with additional U.S. allies and partner nations, indicating potential for expanded adoption of this advanced EW suite in the near future.

The commencement of Viper Shield production underscores the evolving nature of aerial combat and the critical role of electronic warfare in ensuring air superiority. As the only advanced EW solution currently funded and in active production for international F-16 partners, Viper Shield is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of airborne electronic warfare capabilities.
